You may find yourself in a position where you need to make your own patch cord out of CAT 5 cable. The following illustration can be used as a basic guide for terminating the CAT 5 cable with a standard 8 position plug. Other types of cable, including cat 5e, cat 6, and shielded cables may require different techniques, crimp tools and plugs.

Step #1Strip off insulation from the cat 5 cable and cut wires approximately 1" long (fig. 1-1)
Step #2Position the cat 5 cable wires into configuration suggested (wire's 1 through 8) maintaining
the twist only at jacket as shown in (fig.1-2)
Step #3After positioning the wires of the cat 5 cable into proper positions, pinch the jacket over the conductors firmly and cut the final length to approx .300
Step #4Push cat 5 cable into plug housing at an approximate 30 degree angle, while continuing to pinch jacket. Push all conductors under the IDC contacts and as far into the housing.
